Background

“Here You Come Again” was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the celebrated songwriting team behind numerous American pop classics. Their original approach was to create a song built around intense romantic yearning — a feeling of someone repeatedly returning to your life even when you know you should probably resist.

That idea fit Dolly remarkably well.

Introduction

By the mid-1970s, Parton had already established herself as a major country songwriter and performer. She had scored country No. 1s with songs including “Joshua,” “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” and had recently ended her long professional partnership with Porter Wagoner. The next challenge was reaching listeners beyond the traditional country audience.
