VINCE GILL’S “GO REST HIGH ON THAT MOUNTAIN” — THE COUNTRY CLASSIC BORN FROM TWO HEARTBREAKING GOODBYES
Few country songs have become as deeply connected with love, loss, and remembrance as Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain.” Released as a single in August 1995, the ballad was never built around a flashy hook or a radio-friendly storyline. Instead, Gill delivered something far more lasting: a quiet, deeply personal farewell that would eventually become one of country music’s most cherished songs of comfort.
Background
The story behind the song began years before its release. Gill started writing it after the death of country singer Keith Whitley in 1989, but he was unable to finish it. Four years later, tragedy struck much closer to home when Gill’s older brother Bob died in 1993. That loss brought him back to the unfinished song and gave him the emotional clarity to complete it. One subtle detail longtime country fans may recognize: the first verse contains a reference to Whitley’s signature hit, “I’m No Stranger to the Rain,” making the song’s connection to him even more poignant.
Introduction
🎻 What makes the recording especially powerful is its restraint. Gill’s unmistakable tenor carries the melody with almost hymn-like tenderness, while country greats Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs provide the haunting background harmonies. Together, their voices give the song the feeling of an old Southern gospel service — intimate, reverent and timeless.
The song’s impact went far beyond the charts. In 1996, it earned Grammy Awards for Best Country Song and Best Male Country Vocal Performance, as well as the CMA Award for Song of the Year. Three decades later, its legacy remained so strong that an extended version featuring an additional verse was released for its 30th anniversary in 2025, the same year the recording was recognized as double-platinum.

[Chorus]
So go rest high on that mountain
Son, your work on earth is done
Go to heaven a-shoutin’
Love for the Father and the Son[Verse 2]
Oh, how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve
Wish I could see the angels’ faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing[Chorus]
So go rest high on that mountain
Son, your work on earth is done
Go to heaven a-shoutin’
Love for the Father and the Son
