Introduction
By the time Toby Keith released “Red Solo Cup” in 2011, the red plastic party cup was already deeply embedded in American culture. It had been around since the 1970s and was already common at backyard cookouts, tailgates, college parties, fairs, and family gatherings. Red was already the company’s best-selling color.
Then Toby Keith turned the cup into a song. “Red Solo Cup” appeared on Clancy’s Tavern and quickly became much bigger than anyone expected. Before it was even pushed as a traditional single, the video had already passed two million YouTube views, topped the iTunes country sales list, and become one of the most-added songs on country radio.
Background
The funny part came afterward. Keith later recalled that the company behind Solo cups contacted him with a strange problem: people were buying the red cups while the other colors were becoming harder to move. His response was typically simple: if everyone wanted red, stop making so many of the others.
Keith also joked in another interview that the song probably had not made people buy more cups overall. Instead, it may have shifted demand so heavily toward red that the company was left with other colors sitting in stock while red cups were backordered.
That distinction matters. The red Solo cup was already popular long before the song existed, and the company has never publicly released sales figures proving exactly how much Keith changed overall demand. But culturally, the connection became almost impossible to separate.
After 2011, “Red Solo Cup” was no longer just a funny country song about an ordinary party cup. Toby Keith had taken something Americans already recognized and made one particular color even more inseparable from the brand. Sometimes a hit song sells records. This one may also have changed what people reached for in the party aisle.
