Introduction

The Beatles’ final public performance did not happen in a stadium, a theater, or even a proper concert venue.

It happened on a rooftop. On January 30, 1969, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr climbed onto the roof of Apple Corps headquarters at 3 Savile Row in London. Joined by keyboardist Billy Preston, they began playing without announcing the performance to the public below.

Background

For people walking through central London that afternoon, the music seemed to come from nowhere. The Beatles played for roughly 40 minutes, running through songs including “Get Back,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” “I’ve Got a Feeling,” and “One After 909.” Some office workers leaned out of windows. Others climbed onto nearby rooftops. Crowds gathered in the street trying to figure out what was happening.

Not everyone was thrilled. Complaints about the noise eventually brought London police officers to Apple’s building. They made their way upstairs while the band continued playing.

The performance was not dramatically “raided” in the way the story is sometimes retold. Police asked for the music to stop, and after one final run through “Get Back,” the rooftop show came to an end. Then John Lennon delivered the perfect closing line, thanking the audience and joking that he hoped the band had passed the audition. Nobody watching that day knew it would become the last public performance by all four Beatles together.

The group would record more music afterward, including much of Abbey Road, but they never again played a public concert as The Beatles. That is what makes the rooftop footage feel so strange today.

There was no farewell announcement. No final tour. No emotional goodbye. Just four Beatles, Billy Preston, a cold London rooftop, confused pedestrians below, and eventually the police coming upstairs.

It’s been a long timeNow I’m coming back homeI’ve been away nowOh, how I’ve been alone
Wait ’til I come back to your sideWe’ll forget the tears we criedBut if your heart breaksDon’t wait, turn me awayAnd if your heart’s strongHold on, I won’t delay
Wait ’til I come back to your sideWe’ll forget the tears we criedI feel as though you ought to knowThat I’ve been good, as good as I can beAnd if you do, I’ll trust in youAnd know that you will wait for me
It’s been a long timeNow I’m coming back homeI’ve been away nowOh, how I’ve been alone
Wait ’til I come back to your sideWe’ll forget the tears we criedI feel as though you ought to knowThat I’ve been good, as good as I can beAnd if you do, I’ll trust in youAnd know that you will wait for me
But if your heart breaksDon’t wait, turn me awayAnd if your heart’s strongHold on, I won’t delay
Wait ’til I come back to your sideWe’ll forget the tears we criedIt’s been a long timeNow I’m coming back homeI’ve been away nowOh, how I’ve been alone
